How To Build a Good Company Logo

by | January 7, 2021 | How To

Designing the “perfect” logo for your company is impossible. There are no such things as the perfect logo. Well established companies all around the world make minor changes to their logos all the time. So when designing your company logo, you need to understand that if it’s not perfect, that’s ok, You can alter it further down the line.

With this being said, it is known that 40% of kids from the age of 2-3 can see a logo and identify it to a brand, and 100% of kids aged 11 and above can do the same. So logo recognition is very important, but designing a logo doesn’t have to take up all your time. Logos are important, but they’re not everything. They’re just a foundation.

Why Is a Good Logo So Important?

A logo isn’t just a quick image that has been thrown up by a company. Although some logos are so simple such as Facebook, Nike, etc, a lot of thought has gone into designing them. First off, your logo will be remembered by your clients. Recognition is extremely important, so when people see your logo, you need them to know who you are. This moves onto our second reason why logos are so important.

A good logo can help with branding. If people see your logo and know who you are instant, it’s essentially self-branding. Companies such as  Mcdonalds are brilliant at this. Everyone knows what the famous ‘M’ logo means, without seeing the name “Mcdonalds”. A good logo will also help potential customers build trust if your logo looks professional.

Decide Between The 5 Different Logotypes

You’ve seen these different types of logos everywhere, but most of us just put them all into the same category, which is the wrong thing to do. Understand the different types of logos will most definitely help you when it comes to building your own. So take a look at the different logotypes and decide for yourself.

1. WordMark

The logos are where the name of the company is the actual logo such as Coca-Cola, VISA, etc. You might want to use a wordmark logo if you’re just starting out to build up that customer trust and recognition. You can, later on, change your logo to a pictorial logo once your brand is more established.

2. Pictoral

A pictorial logo is a logo such as Twitter, Pinterest, or Shopify logos where the name of the brand, is designed as a logo, usually without using any letters. These logos are usually used by more established companies.

3. Abstract

An abstract logo is a lot more unique than the others. These logos are usually designed by professionals. Some examples of these are Nike, Playboy, Pepsi, etc, and are a lot more niche.

4. Mascot

Using a mascot as your logo usually works best if your audience is younger. People love taking selfies with mascots so this may be a good way to get your brand out there and help with social media marketing. A good example of a mascot logo is KFC.

5. Emblem

Emblem logos are usually used for Universities or other government properties such as hospitals. Some companies have used an emblem logo and became very successful though such as Starbucks.

What To Consider Or Avoid

When it comes to designing the perfect company logo for your brand, there are a few things you may need to consider or avoid. Although we don’t recommend spending weeks trying to come up with the “perfect” idea, breaking everything down will just make the whole process a lot easy and more efficient.

Avoid Using A Trendy Design

Trendy logo designs are those logos you see absolutely everywhere all with the same aim. An example of this is the typically dropshipping logo where there’s a shopping cart between the brand name.

These logos may look good for now, but trends come and go and in 20 years you may regret your decision. If you’re building a dropshipping business that you’re planning on getting rid of in a few months, you might as well follow the trend but if you want to build a long-lasting brand, we advise against it.

Considering The Different Colours

The colours you use for your logo are just as important as the logo itself. Different colours give off different types of vibes, which will make the audience feel a different way towards your brand. If you’re selling mugs, for example, a green logo may not be right for you. Take a look at what different colours mean, and decide for yourself.

  • Red: Passion, Love, Anger
  • Blue: Calm, Responsible, Sadness
  • Yellow: Happiness, Hope, Deceit
  • Green: New beginnings, Abundance, Nature
  • Purple: Royalty, Power
  • Orange: Energy, Happiness, Vitality
  • Black: Bold, Serious
  • Pink: Warmth, Love
  • Brown: Nature, Reliable

It’s Never Too Late To Evolve

When you design a logo, it doesn’t mean you’re stuck with that for life. You have control over your brand, which means if you want to change your logo, you can. Companies such as Apple, IBN, Pepsi, NOKIA, etc, have all evolved their logos down the line. So when we say don’t take too much time on your logo, we mean it. It can always be changed.

By now you should have narrowed down what type of logo you want such as the logotype, the colour, and maybe even the brand name. So let’s see how you can actually build your very own company logo.

To keep everything simple, there are 2 ways you can create your company logo. You can either pay for someone to build one for you or create one yourself. Paying for a logo is not as expensive as you think, just like creating your own can be made simple.

Create Your Own

If you want to create your own company logo, the first thing I would do is get some inspiration. Look at other logos, browse social media, do whatever it takes to get some inspiration. Good free software to use is Canva. Canva is a hotspot for creating logos because of how beginner-friendly it is. If you’re more advanced then adobe photoshop may be right for you.

You can be a lot more detailed on adobe photoshop and is widely used by professionals. Keep your logo simple at the start to just get something in front of you, then advance from there. You use platforms such as Youtube to get more inspiration.

Paying for a logo isn’t always expensive at all. Did you know that Twitter only paid $15 for their logo? and  Nike only paid $35. There are companies such as the BBC that spent £1.5 million on their logos, but this is not necessary for you.

Platforms such as Fiverr offer fairly cheap services. There are plenty of professional designers on Fiverr that will charge little money for their services. You could try other services but they may be more expensive, Fiverr tends to be among the cheapest. All’s you have to do is tell the designer what you want, and let them do their magic.

A logo is important for building brand awareness and recognition. Although logos are important, we don’t recommend spending all your time designing one. Narrowing a logo down to what logo type you want and what colours you wish to use will make this process a lot easier.

Whether you want to pay for a logo to be made for you or create one yourself, you should be coming away from this guide with a pretty good logo. Always remember that your logo can be altered or completely changed in the future so don’t worry too much.
