How To Become An Online Fitness Instructor

by | November 20, 2018 | Making Money

What You Need To Get Started

Being an online fitness instructor is a straightforward and profitable career that can be done from home provided you have the right skills.

In order to become an online fitness instructor, there are a few things you need to do beforehand.

Step 1:

The first thing you need to be able to do is actually be able to instruct people. You will need qualifications to prove that you are capable of helping others with their fitness needs. You will need to pick an area of expertise. There are hundreds of different training programs and training courses available that focus on different areas, find one that you think you can do and pursue. Ideally, find a course that has NCCA (National Commission for Certifying Agencies) accreditation. These programs hold a much higher weight to them due to the higher standards they have.

Step 2:

Once you are confident in the area you have chosen, you need to study. The exams associated with these courses are often rigorous and challenging so make sure to devote plenty of time to study for them. Some programs will offer a variety of study materials to help you out in this regard, but you still must do the studying yourself.

Step 3:

Once you believe that you are suitably prepared sign up for your exam and apply what you’ve learned. The exam itself often takes place quite a while after registration so will have some leftover time for additional cramming. With a bit of luck and plenty of dedication, you will pass your exam and become certified in your field.

Step 4:

Once you possess qualifications proving your ability you then go on to sign up for REPs (Register of Exercise Professionals). This is a board that you can only join if you meet the requirements. Being a member is a huge advantage due to the prestige associated with it and the high bar of entry. Membership proves your worth to the industry and in some cases is a necessity. Once you are a member you must demonstrate proof of your qualifications in order to qualify to be listed on the register. In order to remain a member, you have to gain a certain number of CPD (Continual Professional Development) points over time. Each member must earn 4 points each year and 24 points every 2 years. Points can be earned in a variety of ways including:

  • First aid at work (8 points)
  • Self-taught programs (4 points)
  • Fitness industry workshops (6 points)
  • Endorsed training programs (16 points)
  • REPs online assessments (4 points)
  • Completing REPs journal questions (1 point each)

Lastly, you need to join a platform to find customers. Joining a fitness app as a coach is a simple way to advertise yourself and get business. We will be using the number 1 app from the top 10 fitness apps as an example of how to start your new career.

online trainer vs in-person trainer

Many people don’t actually know that there’s such thing as an online fitness trainer/coach. Here, we’re going to break down the differences in the pricing, quality, and actual service.

One to one personal trainer pricing

In areas such as London, personal trainers can charge up to £200 per session, but in quieter areas outside the capital, the cost can be as little as £15 per hour. So let’s say the average is £35 an hour (which is in most areas outside the capital). Of course, more experienced trainers can charge more, but we’re going off averages. If you had 2 sessions per week over the course of 6 months, this would amount to £303.33 and this is not including your gym membership.

Online personal trainer prices

Online trainers usually charge a monthly fee for their services. Now, this can vary massively since you can choose a trainer from anywhere around the world, including trainers that work with celebrities. If you chose a high-end trainer with tons of experience, this will obviously cost a lot more than someone with a smaller name. On average, the small-time trainers charge around £70 per month and this is including a generic email series with all your meal plans and workout plans, bigger companies and trainers could charge up to £350 per month, but this is because they’ve got more experience and would offer more value.

one to one personal trainer quality

Now, nothing will ever beat the power of a face-to-face personal trainer. The main issue with this is that it’s difficult to find a personal trainer in your area, with the skills you need, at the pricing you can afford. As well as this, it’s hard to find a decent personal trainer too. This is why so many people are turning online because they aren’t limited to who they can choose.

Online personal trainer quality

With evolving technology, everything is becoming easier and easier, including online training. If you find the right trainer, you can have a personal one-to-one relationship with them, just like you would with a physical trainer. Not all trainers will just throw you generic emails with weekly plans on there. You need to find a trainer that will give you weekly calls and checkups on your results, and give you advice on how you can improve. Just like local trainers, there’s a lot of inexperienced trainers online too, but if you can find a good one, your results could match, if not beat the results you’d get from an in-person trainer.

One to one personal trainer service

With a one-to-one personal trainer, you know what you’re paying for. You’ll pay a set price for a gym session where you’ll do some physical exercise. You probably won’t walk away with any additional advice or meal plans unless you agreed upon in, but you know you’ll be having your session.

With online coaches, you tend to get more for your money. They’ll provide your workout plans, meal plans, and what else you can do to achieve your goals. The only thing they’d lack is the in-person motivation that a personal one-to-one could provide. But if you already have the motivation and not the knowledge, then an online fitness coach isn’t a bad idea at all.

How much do online coaches make?

Online fitness trainers can typically earn a lot more than many personal face-to-face trainers. This is because an in-person trainer only has so many hours in a day they can work, whereas an online trainer typically creates a workout/meal plan for their client which will take an hour or two, then that’s more or less it. They could call the client once a week for a chat, but other than that there isn’t much more to do. Because of this, online trainers can typically have a lot more clients than in-person trainers, as long as the online trainers markets themself correctly. It’s known that some online fitness coaches earn up to 6 figure salaries. This won’t go for everybody, but if use basic SEO, SEM, and advertise on the right social media in the correct form, you won’t have a problem getting clients.

Let’s say you charge £70 per month per client to start off with, if you can 10 clients, then that’s £700 per month. That should cover a lot of your bills. This means that anything after these 10 clients is all profit.

Joining An Online App:

Step 1:

The first step is to download the app you wish to sign up for, in this case, we are signing up for GymCube. This stage is simple as the app is free to download and you can also sign up through the website.

Step 2:

After we have the GymCube app installed we will now create our account. Simply enter in your details and create a password for your GymCube account. Make sure you register the account as a coach. You will need to agree to the terms of service in order to sign up.

Step 3:

Once the password has been created and you’ve registered as a coach you will be asked to fill in your personal details including your REPs membership number. This is what GymCube uses to ensure that you are a licensed coach. Make sure that you go into your REPs membership area and check on the button that says, ‘opt-in to GymCube’. If you haven’t opted in, you won’t be verified by REPs.

Step 4:

Now you need to include your bank details. This is how GymCube is able to pay you. Make sure you have your current information on hand when filling in this part of the signup process.

Step 5:

GymCube will now verify that you are on REPs and what you listed qualifications on REPs are, this will be used to see if you qualify to be a GymCube coach and what categories they can put you in. The more categories you are in the more likely to be called up and hired by a client. This will then translate to you being hired more often and earning more. Because of this, it’s a good idea to get as many REPs qualifications as possible.

If you are not currently a member of REPs, you will be prompted to join REPs now. Simply tick all of the boxes and you will be sent to REPs to create an account, you will need to provide your bank details once more and provide evidence of your qualifications.

Step 6:

Now that you have signed up you will need to set up your account to make yourself appealing to clients. Upload an image of yourself and set it as your profile image, make sure you look smart and friendly so that people are more likely to choose you as their coach. Adjust your session rates to make them suitable for your clients. Find a suitable balancing point between making it cheap enough to appeal to clients but not too cheap so that you actually make money. Include your specialties so they know what you can help them with. Upload videos and other tools for your clients.

Now that everything has been set up you are ready to go. Make sure you keep your profile up to date as you go. With any luck, you’ll have clients looking to hire you soon after. As you get clients and get positive reviews your reputation will improve and you will get more and more business as time goes on.
